TALLADEGA, Ala., Aug. 22, 1971 (AP) — Bobby Allison threaded his way through an early traffic jam, survived a last‐lap wreck by Pete Hamilton and then beat Richard Petty across the finish line by 2.1 seconds today to win the Talladega 500 stock‐car race. The 33‐year‐older of three brothers from nearby Hueytown had started in the front row of the 500‐car line‐up and led through most of the 188 circuits round the 2.66‐mile Alabama International Speedway. For most of the way it was a bumper‐to‐bumper duel before a record Alabama crowd of 66,700. Petty wound up second and Hamilton was third. Fred Lorenzen finished fourth in a Plymouth, three laps back of the leaders. Fifth place went to James Hylton, in a Ford, more than 10 miles farther back.
